J.B.Priestley’s play, An Inspector Calls :: English Literature

Dear Mr. Anthony HopkinsThank you for judge the role of the inspector in my production ofJ B Priestleys play An inspector c eachs.The play is set in the early 1912 before the first gear World War in a timewhen in that location was a relative period of economic and social stability. Theplay is set in a fictous North Midlands industrial city of Brumley.The play is about a family, the birls who are celebrating theirdaughters engagement to a teenaged man called Gerald Croft whose familyalso birth a business or factory similar to that of the Birling familybusiness. Gerald Croft and all the members in the Birling family whichinclude Arthur and Sybil Birling (the parents), Eric Birling (theirson) and their daughter Sheila Birling who is move with GeraldCroft are all sat round at the their eat table having a dinnercompany to celebrate the fact that Sheila and Gerald are both engaged. unsloped after Mr.Birling has completed his pompous speech, there dinnerparty is interrupted by the a rrival of examiner Goole, who announcesthat he is making enquiries about a young woman called Eva metalworker whohas committed suicide by swallowing disinfectant. The Inspector firstshows Mr Birling a picture of Eva Smith that Mr Birling recognisesstraight away because Eva Smith use to work in Mr.Birlings factory, besides was ravaged because she was one of the ringleaders of a strike thatwas demanding a pay rise. Mr Birling tries to talk the Inspector in toleaving them alone by making threats to him and trying to run himwith his high social status. The Inspector is still determined tointerrogate all of them hinting to them that they are all connected toEva Smiths death. He talks to Sheila conterminous telling her that Eva Smithuse to work at a big well know shop called Millward but lost her jobdue to a complaint that was made by a jealous and petty-mindedcustomer, that customer was Sheila who now feels very nefarious about EvaSmiths death. We now also harness that Gerald was al so involved with EvaSmith, who at that time went by the name Daisy Renton. Gerald had hadan affair with Daisy Renton (alias Eva Smith) the previous pass shewas his mistress until it no more suited him.
